Greek capital in southern Gran Canaria: Premia and the Giannis Antetokounmpo clan (NBA) pay 64 million for Sunwing Hotels

Sunwing will begin operating in southern Gran Canaria in January 2026 under new ownership. At the end of 2025, one of the most significant transactions of the year in Gran Canaria's hotel sector was finalized. The Greek REIT Premia Properties completed the purchase of the Sunwing Arguineguín hotel, a four-star, 252-room property located in the municipality of Mogán, for €64 million. The transaction, which involves the acquisition of 100% of Hoteles Sunwing SAU from Airtours Resort Ownership España (a subsidiary of Nordic Leisure Travel Group - NLTG), marks a milestone in the expansion of Greek capital in the Atlantic, financed directly by the National Bank of Greece.

The financial engineering of the purchase guarantees the operational continuity of an asset that has functioned successfully for almost four decades. Under a sale-leaseback arrangement, the Nordic group NLTG will remain as a tenant through a triple net lease agreement—where the lessee assumes all the property's expenses—for an initial period of 15 years, renewable for another 10. The agreement establishes an initial annual rent for Premia of €4,64 million, ensuring an immediate and stable cash flow for the company chaired by Ilias Georgiadis, who already manages a tourism portfolio of 1.050 rooms valued at €180 million.

However, what has captured the attention of the workers is not just the building itself, but the dazzling array of shareholders who have backed this expansion through a private placement. NBA superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo has entered Premia's capital with a €3,3 million investment to acquire 2% of the company. Joining the "Greek Freak" are heavyweights of the Greek economy such as the Sklavenitis family (owners of Greece's largest supermarket chain) with a 2% stake, and Giorgos Daskalakis, founder of Stoiximan and Kaizen Gaming, who has contributed €5 million to control 3,5% of the company.

This growth strategy is further supported by Premia's key shareholders: Sterner Stenhus Greece (€8 million), the Swedish giant Fastighets AB Balder (€12 million), and hotel magnate Petter Stordalen, who, through NLTG, has injected an additional €6,5 million. With this financial backing, Premia has launched a roadmap aiming to exceed 2.000 rooms within the next two years, consolidating southern Gran Canaria as the strategic cornerstone of its profitability in the European market.
