The project will modernize the public lighting along the tourist coastline between Playa del Inglés and San Agustín, reducing energy consumption by more than 50%.
The action is part of the Tourism Sustainability Plan for the Destination “Impulsa Maspalomas”, financed with Next Generation EU funds
The Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium, an entity jointly owned by the Gran Canaria Island Council and the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, has signed the contract for improving the energy efficiency of the public lighting on the Paseo Costa Canaria, an action valued at 475.000 euros that will modernize the lighting of one of the main tourist areas in the south of the island.
The administrative body has awarded the project to the company Aceinsa Canarias, SA, with the aim of advancing the transformation of Maspalomas Costa Canaria as a sustainable tourist destination, aligned with the green transition, digitalization and the improvement of the competitiveness of the tourism sector.
The primary objective of the contract is to modernize the public lighting infrastructure along the tourist coastline, with the aim of improving service quality, increasing safety in the area, and generating significant energy savings. The project will be carried out on the section of the Costa Canaria Promenade between the Anexo II Shopping Centre in Playa del Inglés and the end of the San Agustín beach promenade.
As part of this project, the Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium, in coordination with the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, will replace approximately 244 streetlights, mostly high-pressure sodium vapor lamps, with new LED technology streetlights.
The new technology is much more efficient, making better use of energy and offering a wider range of color temperatures. Additionally, 48 projectors installed on the six towers located around the parking lot of the Anexo II Shopping Center will be replaced.
This measure aims to guarantee energy savings of over 50%, along with a reduction in the carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) footprint of more than 180 kilograms per year. In addition to lower electricity consumption, the implementation of LED technology will reduce maintenance costs, as these systems have a considerably longer lifespan—generally between 25.000 and 50.000 hours, with an estimated duration of 12 to 25 years or more—while also contributing to greater safety and comfort for residents and visitors.
This action is part of the Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destination “Impulsa Maspalomas”, developed by the Island Energy Council of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, in collaboration with the Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium, and is part of the Program of Tourism Sustainability Plans in Destination, financed by the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism – Next Generation EU.
The works will begin in the coming weeks and will have an estimated duration of four months, thus meeting the planned execution deadlines.
