In a strategic move to consolidate its dominance in the Scandinavian market, the Gran Canaria Tourist Board brought the essence of the Maspalomas dunes to the heart of Stockholm this winter. The south of the island took center stage at the Queen & King of the Court 2026, one of the most spectacular events on the Crown Series international beach volleyball circuit, held under the imposing dome of the Avicii Arena.
An analysis of Gran Canaria's air capacity in the Nordic market for the summer of 2026 reveals a stark contrast that necessitates a redefinition of strategy in Northern Europe. While Norway stands out as the major growth driver with a spectacular 39,2% increase, adding more than 19.000 new seats, the rest of the region shows signs of fatigue that are causing concern in the sector.
Sweden leads the declines with a 17,2% drop (5.904 fewer seats), closely followed by Finland, which loses 11,5% of its connectivity. Denmark, meanwhile, manages to maintain figures similar to the previous year with a slight negative adjustment of 1,1%. This disparate performance reveals that, although Norwegian interest in southern Gran Canaria is at an all-time high, connectivity with Stockholm and Helsinki airports is experiencing an operational slump that is weighing down the overall balance of the Scandinavian market for the upcoming summer season.
The promotional activity at the Queen & King of the Court 2026 was no coincidence. Gran Canaria seeks to position itself not only as a sun and beach haven, but also as the preferred outdoor high-performance training center for the sporting elite of Northern Europe. The message sent from the Swedish capital was clear: while the continent freezes over, the island offers the perfect conditions for forging champions.
The best example of this connection is the Swedish duo David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig. The current Olympic champions in Paris 2024, who once again triumphed in this tournament in front of their home crowd, maintain a close relationship with the south of the island. Before winning gold in France, the pair chose Gran Canaria's facilities and climate for their final preparations, taking advantage of the stable temperatures that allow them to train at their highest level even in January.
The presence of the Gran Canaria brand on the Avicii Arena track allowed the island to directly target a highly sought-after Nordic tourist profile: young, with high purchasing power, and passionate about an active lifestyle. With this initiative, the destination strengthens its appeal during the winter months, positioning the island as the ideal "training ground" for athletes who, like Åhman and Hellvig, see the Maspalomas sand as the first step towards international success.
