Greenland's full connectivity to the world depends on Maspalomas. The Canary Islands Space Center, with its 40 professionals, is establishing itself as a vital hub for global connectivity and science. One of the antennas managed by the team from Isdefe (Spanish Defense Systems Engineering) in conjunction with INTA (Esteban Terradas National Institute of Aerospace Technology) plays a surprising and critical role: it is the key component that enables internet access in remote Greenland. This technological milestone underscores the importance of the infrastructure installed in southern Gran Canaria, capable of supporting essential services in opposite corners of the globe.
The scale of these operations prompted an official visit this February by Isdefe's CEO, Manuel Cutrín, who, accompanied by the company's senior management, including Mayte Castillo (Corporate Development), Daniel Acuña (Operations), Alberto Torró (General Secretariat), and Isaac Domínguez Santos (Space and Technology Centers), personally oversaw the work of more than 40 professionals from the Spanish public engineering sector. These technicians are involved in receiving data from Earth Observation satellites and supporting highly complex international missions.
Activity at the Maspalomas center extends far beyond communications; it provides essential support for the world's leading space agencies. Isdefe's teams ensure mission integrity and the operational readiness of satellite constellations for the ESA (European Space Agency), NASA, and JAXA. This multidisciplinary collaboration makes Gran Canaria one of the most important "listening stations" and control points in the Atlantic, guaranteeing that scientific data reaches international command centers without interference.
Beyond the space race, the impact of the work carried out in the south of the island has direct applications in daily life and security. Thanks to the monitoring and data reception at this center, it is possible to obtain highly accurate weather forecasts, conduct effective monitoring of global emergencies, and improve border security. Maspalomas is not only a top tourist destination but also a technological hub that actively contributes to the advancement of global connectivity and the protection of the integrity of space data for the benefit of international science.
