Gran Canaria activates wind alert and pre-alert for rain ahead of the arrival of a storm

aspalomas24h Friday, February 27, 2026

The storm will bring persistent rainfall, strong gusts of wind and possible mud rain, and will especially affect the peaks and midlands of the northern coast

The Island Corporation continues to actively monitor weather conditions and reminds citizens of the importance of self-protection.

The Gran Canaria Island Civil Protection Plan (PEIN) has declared a wind alert and a pre-alert for rain across the entire island, effective from 14:00 PM this Thursday, due to the forecast of new adverse weather conditions. This measure, adopted in coordination with the activation of the Canary Islands Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Weather Events (PEFMA) by the Directorate General of Emergencies, is in response to the approach of a storm system expected to affect the archipelago in the coming hours.

According to information provided by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), persistent rain is expected, which could occasionally be moderate to heavy, accompanied by intense downpours and strong winds. The storm will also bring haze, with the possibility of mud rain, as it will lift dust from the African continent and carry it towards the Canary Islands.

The rainfall will mainly affect the higher elevations and peaks of the northern coast of Gran Canaria, as well as other islands in the archipelago, such as Tenerife, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote. On the latter two, thunderstorms and even small hail are possible.

As for the wind, gusts of up to 80 km/h are expected, which will have a greater impact on the southeast and southwest slopes, and on the mid-altitude areas facing south.

The director of PEIN and president of the Gran Canaria Island Council, Antonio Morales Méndez, together with the technical director of PEIN, Federico Grillo Delgado, have signed the declaration that activates the monitoring and coordination protocols with the different municipalities and with the emergency services.

Recommendations to the population

As is always the case in situations of this nature, the Gran Canaria Island Council is actively monitoring the weather situation and also reminds citizens of the importance of self-protection.

Specifically, it recommends that the public exercise extreme caution when traveling by road, especially in summit and ravine areas, and advises against parking vehicles in ravine beds or in areas susceptible to flooding.
Similarly, it asks citizens to secure doors, windows and elements of their homes that may be detached due to strong gusts of wind.

Furthermore, it urges the people of Gran Canaria to stay informed through official sources and to follow the instructions of the emergency services at all times.

Finally, it points out that more information can be obtained, as well as monitoring the situation, on the official website of the Cabildo: www.grancanaria.com, as well as on the social networks of the Island Corporation and those of Emergency Services 1-1-2.
