Tirajana: The average income in San Bartolomé is more than 5.000 euros higher than that of Santa Lucía

The geography of inequality in the Canary Islands paints a picture of contrasts, with San Bartolomé de Tirajana standing out as the bastion of prosperity in the south, although still a considerable distance from the administrative capitals. Within the islands' complex economic ecosystem, data from the Spanish Tax Agency places the average gross income of Gran Canaria's quintessential tourist municipality at €28.305. This figure consolidates the town's position among the top five most prosperous cities in the Canary Islands with more than 40.000 inhabitants, surpassing major regional industrial and port centers.

This is an analysis of the average gross income in San Bartolomé de Tirajana: with 28.305 euros, the tourist municipality leads prosperity in the south of Gran Canaria, although the gap with the capitals and its neighbor Santa Lucía de Tirajana remains significant.

The ranking of wealthiest municipalities in the Canary Islands reveals a clear hierarchy where the administrative and service-oriented power of the capital cities remains unbeatable compared to the purely vacation-based model. Las Palmas leads the ranking with a gross income of €31.862, closely followed by Santa Cruz de Tenerife with €31.004. San Bartolomé de Tirajana, in fourth place regionally, is the first tourism-focused municipality on the list, demonstrating that the high-value leisure industry in Maspalomas and Meloneras generates competitive per capita wealth, placing it just €70 behind a historic university and residential center like San Cristóbal de La Laguna, which registers €28.375.

The most revealing comparison in this report comes when looking at the neighboring municipality, where the paradox of the Tirajana region becomes evident. While San Bartolomé enjoys a privileged position, Santa Lucía de Tirajana tops the list of municipalities with the lowest gross income at €23.027. The difference is staggering, as the average resident of San Bartolomé de Tirajana earns €5.278 more annually than one in Santa Lucía. This gap of almost 23% underscores the specialization of the two areas, with the former concentrating capital and luxury residential areas, while the latter acts as a commuter town and hub for low-cost services, absorbing the working class with more modest wages.

A critical piece of data in this analysis is disposable income, which represents the actual money citizens have left in their pockets after fulfilling their tax obligations. San Bartolomé de Tirajana, despite having a higher gross income than Puerto del Rosario, has a lower disposable income, at €20.596 compared to €21.753 in the capital of Fuerteventura. This suggests a higher tax burden or a less favorable deduction structure for its high-income taxpayers, which, curiously, leaves residents of southern Gran Canaria with less immediate liquidity than those of Fuerteventura, despite nominally generating more gross income.

The chronicle of income in the Canary Islands concludes that the tourist success of San Bartolomé de Tirajana is capable of raising the standards of gross wealth, but it fails to close the gap with the political and financial decision-making centers of the Canary Island capitals. At the same time, the contrast with municipalities like Arona, which registers €23.060, or Santa Lucía de Tirajana itself, reveals an archipelago that is progressing at two speeds. The tourist development of the south of the islands has not yet translated into homogeneous economic prosperity for the entire population of the surrounding area, maintaining a hierarchy where the postal code continues to drastically determine the purchasing power of Canary Islanders.
