Epic Fury: Gran Canaria and Jet A-1 kerosene rises to 600 euros in Gando, more expensive than Madrid Barajas

The aviation fuel market is showing no signs of slowing down on March 4, 2026. In a global context where a barrel of Jet A1 is already trading at $85,5, Gran Canaria Airport has seen its benchmark price break the psychological barrier of €600 per 1.000 liters. With the price set this Wednesday at €600,32/1000 L (equivalent to $661,77), the island finds itself in an intermediate position, but noticeably more severely affected than other major logistics hubs on the Iberian Peninsula. This significant price change is due to the airstrikes against Iran, launched on Saturday by the US outside the framework of the UN Charter.

The comparison with mainland airports highlights the cost gap imposed by insularity, despite subsidies and the proximity of the Salinetas storage facility. While Barajas operates with Jet A-1 at €576,98 and Málaga leads the way in competitiveness with an enviable €550,7, Gran Canaria must bear an additional cost of almost €50 per cubic meter compared to the Andalusian capital.

Within the archipelago itself, the situation is mixed. Gran Canaria manages to stay slightly below Seville's €609,16, but is outcompeted by the efficiency of Tenerife-Reina Sofía, which currently stands at €598,91. However, the worst offenders are the smaller islands and airports with lower traffic volumes: flying from Lanzarote currently costs €693,44 per 1.000 liters, and in Fuerteventura the figure rises to €688,56, almost 15% more expensive than at Gando Airport.

This price surge, which has pushed the cost per liter on the wholesale market to around $0,541, is testing the profitability of inter-island flights and routes to the mainland. With ports like Las Palmas under pressure from maritime supplies, kerosene adds another layer of uncertainty to a week where every penny counts to sustain the season's tourist traffic.
