The chain reinforces its leadership in sustainability after generating 586 MWh of photovoltaic energy
SPAR Gran Canaria has presented its annual energy efficiency and sustainability report for the 2025 financial year. The results consolidate the supermarket chain as a benchmark in the ecological transition in the Canary Islands, highlighting historic progress in the use of renewable energies, the optimization of its electricity consumption and the reduction of its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
During 2025, the group generated a total of 586 MWh of photovoltaic energy through the facilities of its three logistics centers, bringing SPAR Gran Canaria closer to achieving its goal of 20% renewable energy generation in its main distribution centers.
A key milestone in this growth has been the commissioning of the new refrigerated and frozen products warehouse, whose solar roof produced more than 266 MWh.
As a result, SPAR Gran Canaria has increased its renewable self-consumption by 80% compared to 2024, with self-generated clean energy now representing more than 18% of total consumption. This is one of the most significant achievements of the year, demonstrating solid progress towards decarbonization and energy independence.
Furthermore, the photovoltaic installation at the Mercalaspalmas warehouse has allowed 146 MWh of renewable energy to be fed into the grid, setting a target of reaching 700 MWh by 2026, continuing its commitment to clean energy.
This saving is the direct result of a comprehensive energy efficiency strategy that has included technological optimization thanks to improvements in lighting, cooling and air conditioning systems; adjustment of operating hours and energy loads; increased photovoltaic generation capacity and continuous audits that involve periodic energy assessments to detect inefficiencies and prioritize new impact investments.
Modernizing the fleet and logistics equipment has been another key focus of the 2025 Sustainability Plan. The proportion of electric and hybrid vehicles has increased from 14% to 24%, while the use of logistics machinery equipped with efficient lithium-ion batteries has risen from 45% to 53%.
Overall, the total photovoltaic energy emissions have prevented 420 tons of CO₂ per year, equivalent to planting approximately 20.000 trees. This achievement has been particularly noteworthy thanks to the parallel increase in the company's economic and logistical activity.
These actions directly contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to achieving the objective set out in the company's Sustainability Plan. This data demonstrates the positive evolution of SPAR Gran Canaria thanks to the increased electrification of its fleet, the higher percentage of low-impact machinery, and the continuous improvement of operational indicators.
