The epicenter of island sustainability shifts to southern Gran Canaria next April, where the Expomeloneras convention center in Maspalomas will become the global laboratory for solutions for the world's most vulnerable territories. The choice of this tourist enclave to host the third Global Summit on Sustainable Islands is no coincidence: the south of the island will serve as a showcase to demonstrate to more than a dozen ministers and international investors how a limited territory can aspire to energy sovereignty. On April 21, 22, and 23, the eyes of archipelagos from around the world will be on the Salto de Chira project, which utilizes the island's interior topography to guarantee a stable renewable energy supply—a model many countries are seeking to replicate.
James Ellsmoor, director of the organizing body Island Innovation, emphasized that this event in Maspalomas aims to be a platform for strategic alliances to address shared challenges such as energy resilience and climate change. Southern Gran Canaria will not only contribute its logistical infrastructure but will also bring to the table the expertise of the Technological Institute of the Canary Islands and the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands. The intention is clear: to demonstrate to the rest of the world that the islands are not merely victims of global warming, but rather innovation hubs capable of generating solutions that can be exported to other continents, elevating the strategic value of the event to a higher economic and diplomatic dimension.
For his part, the Cabildo's Environment Councillor, Raúl García Brink, has focused on a critical concern for land management: population carrying capacity. The Expomeloneras forums will address how to balance human presence in limited spaces to prevent the collapse of resources and services. With the confirmed attendance of international organizations and private capital, the summit in Maspalomas is shaping up to be the venue where the islands' survival and development policies for the coming decades will be defined, seeking to avoid the negative consequences of uncontrolled growth while embracing cutting-edge technology.
