The 'refuge effect': From Hormuz to Maspalomas, AI takes over holidays in the Canary Islands

Yurena Vega - M24h Monday, March 16, 2026

The escalating conflict in the Gulf, with the suspension of routes through the Strait of Hormuz and the mass cancellation of TUI operations to the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Bahrain, has triggered an automatic transfer of tourism capital. Southern Gran Canaria is not only picking up the pieces of the Middle Eastern shipwreck; it has become the security hub for the European market.

While kerosene prices rise and skies over the East close, the perception of safety in the south of the island has climbed to 82,08%, solidifying its status as a "low volatility" asset. What TUI's data from March 15th confirms is that Artificial Intelligence is not just a promise, it's a powerful tool for bookings: TUI's new 'smart package' feature redirects users searching for Dubai or Abu Dhabi to TUI Blue hotels in southern Gran Canaria in real time, based on the availability of safe direct flights and price stability.

In just two weeks since the app update, bookings have jumped by almost a third. This is no coincidence: AI is optimizing packages based on "sustainability and risk," where the Canary Islands far outperform any destination in the Persian Gulf. For summer 2026, TUI is already implementing predictive pricing. They know that demand in southern Gran Canaria will be 22% higher, so the algorithm is "pushing" early bookings with 25% discounts to secure cash flow before airfare inflation becomes unsustainable.

Despite the digital boom, the sector in the islands faces a stark reality: profit margins. Although TUI reports an 18% margin on its all-inclusive packages, local spending could suffer. If TUI's AI succeeds in getting 72% of bookings made via mobile under the all-inclusive model, the money stays within the app and its own-brand hotels, leaving local businesses high and dry. It's the 'uberization' of the package holiday: AI decides where the tourist sleeps before they even realize they're afraid of flying over the Gulf.
