The reservoirs in central and southern Gran Canaria added 700.000 cubic meters in a single month

The water map of southern Gran Canaria, according to the Gran Canaria Island Water Council, presents a stark contrast this March, ahead of the expected storm, where the abundance of a few reservoirs fails to mask the chronic drought affecting the larger basins. See the February water balance for Gran Canaria: Excluding Chira and Soria, the reservoirs in the south are at 18,66% of capacity. Candelaria and Vaquero are at 100%, while Ayagaures is at reduced levels.

If the large Chira and Soria reservoirs are excluded from the analysis, the water situation of the Cabildo's dams in southern Gran Canaria at the end of February 2026 shows a much more optimized management of resources, with a fill level of 18,66%. From this perspective, the total volume accumulated in the rest of the network amounts to 1.976.543 cubic meters, after registering an increase of 708.319 cubic meters compared to the previous month.

The Candelaria and Vaquero reservoirs have been the main focus of this period, reaching their maximum operating capacity. Both are at 100% of their theoretical volume, with 396.884 cubic meters and 267.041 cubic meters respectively, after experiencing significant increases of 238.718 cubic meters in the case of Candelaria and 90.981 cubic meters in the case of Vaquero during the last month.

Gambuesa reservoir occupies an intermediate position in terms of reserves, consolidating its role as the main storage capacity outside the major basins with 590.141 cubic meters, representing 43,76% of its capacity. El Mulato follows, maintaining remarkable stability at 31,88% of its total capacity, holding 242.207 cubic meters of water. Conversely, the situation remains extremely precarious in the lower-elevation reservoirs. Fataga holds only 4,09% of its capacity (13.421 cubic meters), while Ayagaures is almost completely depleted, with a residual volume of 6.497 cubic meters, representing a critical 0,35% of its filling capacity.
