The supermarket chain and Coagrisan sign the annual agreement with the support of the regional government, the island council and the city council

More than 650 families and 69 jobs secured thanks to the sale of this product

SPAR Gran Canaria plans to sell 500 tons of tomatoes from La Aldea de San Nicolás in more than 200 SPAR stores across the island, thanks to a collaboration agreement signed this Wednesday with Coagrisan, a Canary Islands cooperative. Through this agreement, now in its sixth consecutive year, the supermarket chain promotes the production and sale of high-quality tomatoes.

SPAR Gran Canaria will offer the Solange, Aldiana, and Cabosur varieties in all its stores until next June, as part of the 2025/2026 campaign. Purchasing this local product will directly contribute to maintaining the jobs of 69 people and supporting more than 650 families who are part of Coagrisan.

Tomato cultivation in La Aldea is the main job-generating activity in the municipality, so supporting this product also means supporting the local economy and the continuity of a key sector for the area.

In this regard, SPAR Gran Canaria has once again guaranteed Coagrisan exclusive distribution of its products at a fair price, covering production costs and promoting and raising awareness of the product and its quality standards among customers. Other commitments include fostering sustainable practices, improving working conditions for farmers, and developing promotional strategies to strengthen the competitiveness of Canary Island tomatoes in the market.

The agreement has received institutional support from the Government of the Canary Islands, the Gran Canaria Island Council, the La Aldea de San Nicolás Town Council, and the Coordinator of Farmers' and Livestock Breeders' Organizations of the Canary Islands (COAG). Thanks to this institutional collaboration, SPAR Gran Canaria will once again be the exclusive distributor of tomatoes grown in La Aldea to the other municipalities.

With this agreement, SPAR Gran Canaria reinforces its commitment to the primary sector and to locally sourced products, encouraging its consumers to buy local products and strengthening its relationship with more than 200 farmers and ranchers on the island.

Institutional support for local tomato cultivation

The agreement was signed this Wednesday at the Mercalaspalmas facilities, with numerous authorities and representatives from the sector in attendance. Those present included the President of the Gran Canaria Island Council, Antonio Morales; the Mayor of La Aldea de San Nicolás, Pedro Suárez; the Director General of Agriculture for the Canary Islands Government, Juan Ramón Rodríguez; the Island Councillor for Primary Sector, Miguel Hidalgo; and the Island Director of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, Alejandro Báez.

Representing the supermarket chain were the president and vice president of SPAR Gran Canaria, Ángel Medina and José López, respectively, accompanied by several executives, as well as the vice president of Coagrisan, Rogelio Rodríguez, and the president of COAG Canarias, María del Carmen Pérez, among other attendees.

Ángel Medina emphasized that “the renewal of this agreement responds to a reality that cannot be ignored: the primary sector in the Canary Islands faces significant structural challenges, from production costs to foreign competition. This agreement is not just a commercial alliance, but a tool for stability for tomato producers in La Aldea.”

The president of the island council, Antonio Morales, highlighted the importance of this crop as one of the main elements of identity and economic significance for areas like La Aldea. He also emphasized the recent publication of the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) for Gran Canaria tomatoes as “a very important step.” “This designation strengthens the protection of our tomato's characteristics in an outermost region and will allow us to access more public funding,” he stated.

The mayor, for his part, stressed that “it is a source of pride that, thanks to this agreement, Canarian families and those who visit us can enjoy a top-quality tomato, grown in our land, recognized for its qualities throughout Europe and an indisputable symbol of village identity.”

“We are talking about a product with enormous economic, social, and even identity value for La Aldea and Gran Canaria, which has demonstrated over time a great capacity for resilience and adaptation in the face of difficulties such as foreign competition from third countries. Furthermore, we want to highlight SPAR Gran Canaria's firm commitment to local products and to those who make them possible,” added the member of the Canary Islands Executive.

Rogelio Rodríguez stated that this alliance has proven to be a genuine commitment to local products. “Thanks to this agreement, Canarian tomatoes continue to be available on the island's supermarket shelves, bringing consumers a fresh, high-quality product with its own unique identity,” he added.

Finally, COAG Canarias emphasized that "the signing of this agreement not only benefits farmers, but also the end consumer thanks to the chain's constant commitment to local products."
