Green bubble: Iberdrola and Sener promote more than 400 MW of wind power in southern Gran Canaria

The southeastern coast of Gran Canaria is consolidating its position as the preferred location for the development of Spain's first commercial offshore wind farm. This area, identified in the Maritime Spatial Planning Plans (POEM) as a high-performance zone, is the focus of investment from Basque developers Iberdrola and Sener. The combined capacity projected by both companies for this strategic site exceeds 400 megawatts of renewable power, a key deployment for the archipelago's energy independence and for the inauguration of offshore wind in Spanish waters. However, this is contingent on approval from the CNMC (National Markets and Competition Commission) and the National Court, because, as Maspalomas24H reported this April, Geenalia has been denied permission.

Iberdrola, under the chairmanship of Ignacio Sánchez Galán, has the San Borondón complex currently in the permitting phase. Located off the coast of Agüimes, this project envisions the installation of 17 large-scale wind turbines. The infrastructure has an installed capacity exceeding 200 MW, taking advantage of the consistent wind conditions in this Atlantic region and its proximity to the experimental facilities of the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN).

For its part, Sener, through its alliance with Bluefloat and Plenitude, is developing the Tarahal wind farm in the same area. This facility will consist of 13 wind turbines located eight kilometers offshore, guaranteeing a capacity exceeding 200 MW. The convergence of these two projects in the CAN GC-1 wind farm zone, proposed by the Canary Islands Maritime Cluster as a high-performance wind energy area, strengthens the islands' position to lead the national auction against other candidate regions such as Galicia.

The development of these parks not only addresses renewable energy capacity objectives but also aims to create a specialized industrial ecosystem. The selected area aspires to function as a testing and R&D platform, complementing PLOCAN's work to strengthen the local supply chain. With the auction process underway, the construction of these complexes by Iberdrola and Sener represents an economic and technological milestone that seeks to transform the southeastern coast of Gran Canaria into the national benchmark for offshore wind energy.
