Young talent from Maspalomas leads innovation with the Sergio Alonso Foundation at GSIS 2026

YURENA VEGA - M24H Monday, April 27, 2026

The GSIS 2026 summit has concluded in southern Gran Canaria, leaving a legacy that extends far beyond institutional declarations: the recognition of local young talent as the driving force behind the energy transition. The Sergio Alonso Foundation, in its role as the event's official partner, spearheaded the transfer of technical knowledge to new generations, transforming the ExpoMeloneras convention center into a climate innovation laboratory focused on the island environment.

The spotlight of the day fell on 30 students from the 4th year of ESO (Compulsory Secondary Education) and 1st year of Bachillerato (Upper Secondary Education) at IES Faro de Maspalomas, who, within the framework of the Edudemos workshops, developed renewable energy demonstrators. This initiative, carried out in collaboration with the Finnova Foundation and ITQ GmbH, seeks to democratize access to technology and foster scientific vocations among students in the municipality, focusing them directly on solving the sustainability challenges facing the islands.

The Foundation's educational activities were not limited to the closing day in Meloneras, but also included a preliminary phase of intensive work with students from IES Amurga. The involvement of both schools in the south underscores the organization's commitment to Vocational Training and technical baccalaureate programs in Gran Canaria, placing the curiosity and practical skills of young people at the heart of the Island Innovation Summit's agenda.

With the closing of the event in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, the focus now shifts from the exhibition to continuity. The Sergio Alonso Foundation has reaffirmed that its involvement in #GSIS2026 was not a one-off event, but rather part of a long-term strategy to ensure that the future of the Canary Islands is led by qualified professionals in innovation and climate action. The energy demonstrated by the students from Maspalomas stands as the main indicator of success for a summit that successfully connected the global debate with the realities of the local classroom.
