Ruyman Cardoso: “Initiatives like this allow us to reduce our environmental impact, make better use of resources, and continue consolidating a more sustainable model that respects our environment.”
Alejandro Marichal: “With this project, waste becomes an opportunity for our municipality, generating environmental benefits and adding value to those who live and work in San Bartolomé de Tirajana.”
San Bartolomé de Tirajana has become the first municipality in Gran Canaria to implement a composting system for organic waste and pruning remains from hotel establishments, a pioneering initiative that reinforces the municipal commitment to sustainability and the circular economy.
The project, called Compost T+ Canarias Circular and developed by the company Ayagaures Medioambiente, allows the collection, transport and transformation of organic matter generated in the hotels of the municipality into high quality compost that is later returned to the territory for its agricultural and landscape use.
The First Deputy Mayor, Alejandro Marichal, highlighted during the visit to the composting facilities that this initiative reflects the municipality's commitment to promoting innovative solutions that improve waste management and strengthen the sustainability of the tourist destination.
“With this project, waste ceases to be a problem and becomes an opportunity for our municipality, generating environmental benefits and adding value to those who live and work in San Bartolomé de Tirajana,” said the first deputy mayor.
Marichal emphasized that this project demonstrates how collaboration between administrations, businesses, and the tourism sector can translate into initiatives capable of generating a positive impact on the territory, promoting a more efficient use of resources and strengthening the municipality's commitment to the circular economy.
The project involves some of the main hotel chains in the municipality, including Gloria Thalasso & Hotels, Lopesan, Relaxia Resorts and Satocan, with establishments such as Relaxia Beverly Park, Gloria Palace, Corallium Dunamar by Lopesan Hotels and Gold by Marina.
Since its launch, between September 2025 and April 2026, the initiative has made it possible to manage nearly 100 tons of organic waste, obtaining approximately 20.000 kilos of T+ compost, which is subsequently used to fertilize gardens and green spaces.
The collected waste is transported to the composting plant in Agüimes, where it undergoes a thermophilic aerobic composting process using a system of turned piles. The result is compost classified as type B according to current regulations, with a high content of organic matter and essential nutrients for improving soil fertility and structure.
For his part, the Councillor for Cleaning and Beaches, Ruymán Cardoso, highlighted the importance of continuing to promote initiatives that allow for improved waste management and progress towards a more efficient and environmentally friendly model.
The visit included a tour of the Relaxia Beverly Park Hotel, where he was received by its director, Francisco Acosta, and by the head of Waste Treatment at Ayagaures Medioambiente, Eduardo Izquierdo. Afterwards, the group went to the composting plant, where the head of the Waste Treatment department, Aday Sosa, explained the waste transformation process and the resulting environmental benefits.
With this project, San Bartolomé de Tirajana is at the forefront of sustainable waste management in the Canary Islands, demonstrating that collaboration between public administration, businesses and the tourism sector can generate innovative solutions with environmental, economic and social benefits for the entire municipality.
