The radiologist specializing in Breast pathology at San Roque University Hospitals in Vegueta and Maspalomas, José Carlos Antela LópezShe points out that breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, with an approximate incidence of "one in eight," but emphasizes that survival reaches 85-90% at five years thanks to early detection and current treatments: "With early detection and current treatments, survival is very high," she states.
In this context, he insists that prevention is "fundamental", especially through regular check-ups with specialists.
Population-based screening and reviews
Antela explains that the screening program is aimed at women between 50 and 70 years old, with mammograms every two years, although she points out that it will foreseeably be extended up to 75 years old.
For younger women, he indicates that there is no clear consensus, although he recommends considering individual screenings starting at age 40. In the case of symptoms, the specialist explains that the protocol varies according to age, beginning with ultrasound in women under 35 and combining mammography and ultrasound from age 40 onward: "Checkups with specialists are essential," he emphasizes.
Furthermore, it warns that ultrasound does not replace mammography, since there are lesions —such as microcalcifications— that can only be detected with the latter.
Advanced technology in diagnostic imaging
The San Roque unit has state-of-the-art equipment, including digital mammography with tomosynthesis, contrast mammography, high-end ultrasound and advanced magnetic resonance imaging.
The specialist points out that the center was a pioneer in Spain in the implementation of contrast mammography, which has made it a national reference in this field: "There is no imaging technique that we do not have," he assures.
These tools are complemented by interventional techniques such as biopsies and image-guided procedures, which allow for a more precise diagnosis and guide treatment.

In his opinion, technological advances and medical coordination are significantly improving outcomes against a disease that, despite its high incidence, now has high cure rates if detected early.
