The organization presents, in the vicinity of the Maspalomas Lighthouse, the main actions carried out and planned to modernize infrastructure and public spaces
The Governing Board of the Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium, an entity shared by the Gran Canaria Island Council and the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, presented this Tuesday in the vicinity of the Maspalomas Lighthouse the main works promoted by the organization during the last year, through the institutional spot “Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium, driving change”.
The actions developed and planned have a total investment of 7.320.154,44 euros and aim to continue advancing in the modernization, sustainability and improvement of public spaces in the main tourist center of the island.
Among the main interventions presented are the works of the Municipal Market, the landscape remodeling of the hillside around the Tobogán-Playa, the renovation of about 27 access points to the beaches, the improvement of the energy efficiency of the public lighting of the Paseo Costa Canaria and the revaluation of the area around the Maspalomas Lighthouse.
The Consortium also announced future strategic actions for the municipality, including the remodeling of the Santa Águeda seafront promenade, the implementation of a Sustainable Urban Drainage System in the area of the Maspalomas Pond and the first phase of the bike lane and cycle path between Meloneras and Pasito Blanco.
The president of the Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium and the Gran Canaria Island Council, Antonio Morales, highlighted the quality of the work carried out by the Maspalomas Consortium. “This project is taking place in an emblematic and unique location, which is already a true icon for the island,” he said, adding that this intervention “restores the space to its original appearance and impact, and, moreover, decisive action was necessary due to the deterioration accumulated over the last few years.”
Morales also praised the “institutional collaboration between both administrations: the Gran Canaria Island Council and the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council to guarantee a quality public investment that will generate improvements in public spaces and in some of the most important places in the Canary Islands.”
For his part, the first deputy mayor, Councillor for Urban Planning and Housing of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Alejandro Marichal, pointed out that the various interventions promoted by the Consortium “are a demonstration of the commitment of the institutions to the continuous improvement of our public spaces, the modernization of tourist infrastructure and the strengthening of the competitiveness of San Bartolomé de Tirajana.”
Marichal also expressed his gratitude for “the work carried out by the Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium to ensure that two public administrations work together on actions that contribute to the modernization of the environment and guarantee that the municipality can compete against other places and destinations.”
Carlos Álamo, the Tourism Councillor of Gran Canaria and a member of the entity jointly owned by the Gran Canaria Island Council and the local council, explained that “thanks to this work, today we can talk about a direct investment of 10 million euros from Gran Canaria Tourism, channeled through the Consortium, which has already materialized in various projects. Among them is this promenade, located in one of the most emblematic and visited areas of our destination.”
The presentation of the promotional video was followed by a visit to the construction work currently underway around the Maspalomas Lighthouse, a project awarded to Lopesan with an investment of €400.955,79. The project, now in its final phase, will improve accessibility and the Meloneras Promenade, thus completing the previous phases of an intervention that began in 2020.
This time, the project has consisted of improving the pavement, installing street furniture, completely renewing the railings and the public lighting network, as well as placing new adapted benches.
Improvement of the El Pajar Seafront Promenade
The Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium, funded by Gran Canaria Tourism, is also promoting the renovation of the Santa Águeda Beach promenade in the town of El Pajar. The project, awarded to the company Insmoelca Instalaciones y Montajes Eléctricos Canarios SL, has a budget of €862.660.
The project includes the repair and conditioning of the Juan Moreno Artiles 'El Boya' seafront promenade, with a length of 145 meters, as well as the reinforcement of the existing retaining wall.
In addition, the project will create new shaded areas by installing platforms and pergolas, improve the landscaped areas and the children's area, replace the current lighting with solar systems, and enhance beach accessibility to facilitate access for people with reduced mobility.
Actions in urban networks
Among the actions promoted by the Consortium are also the works on urban networks, awarded to Canaragua, intended to connect the Municipal Market with the municipal communication and sewage networks, among other basic services.
These actions are part of the joint strategy of the public administrations to continue moving towards a more modern, accessible and sustainable tourism model, adapted to the current needs of residents and visitors of southern Gran Canaria.
