The Governing Board of this inter-administrative body has formalized a package of completed and planned investments totaling €7.320.154. This injection of funds, jointly funded by the Gran Canaria Island Council and the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, seeks to raise the standard of urban services in the region's main economic engine, responding to pressure from institutional funds demanding improvements in the areas surrounding their real estate portfolios.
The budget allocation prioritizes the renovation of key tourist hotspots where additional spending from Central European markets is concentrated. The projects include the structural renovation of the Municipal Market, the landscaping of the hillside surrounding the Tobogán-Playa area, the technical upgrade of 27 access points to the beaches along the coast, and the optimization of energy efficiency through the replacement of public lighting on the Costa Canaria Promenade. The strategy for revitalizing public spaces places particular emphasis on the area surrounding the Maspalomas Lighthouse, a high-traffic pedestrian hub critical to the image of the five-star and luxury hotel brands operating in the Meloneras tourist area.
The deployment of public financial resources is complemented by an additional allocation channeled through the Gran Canaria Tourism Board, raising the impact of the coordinated direct investment to €10 million within the municipality. The contract for accessibility improvements around the Maspalomas Lighthouse, formally awarded to the construction company Lopesan for €400.955, is nearing completion. The project has involved the complete renovation of the Meloneras Promenade pavement, the replacement of safety railings, the upgrading of lighting systems, and the installation of adapted street furniture to address mobility issues that were negatively impacting the experience of premium customers.
The diversification of investment towards the western part of the region includes the renovation of the Santa Águeda Beach promenade in El Pajar, a project awarded to Insmoelca Instalaciones y Montajes Eléctricos Canarios SL with a budget of €862.660. The technical work encompasses the refurbishment of 145 linear meters of the Juan Moreno Artiles 'El Boya' promenade, the installation of shade structures to mitigate the heat, improvements to the landscaped areas, and the introduction of solar technology for the street lighting. This initiative aims to alleviate congestion in traditional urban centers and increase the real estate value of the emerging seafront areas in the south of the island.
The Consortium's strategic plan for the next fiscal year incorporates environmental sustainability criteria aimed at safeguarding the legal security and climate resilience of the destination. The master plan includes the implementation of a Sustainable Urban Drainage System in the ecological area surrounding the Maspalomas Pond, a technical measure to prevent polluting runoff into the nature reserve, along with the development of the first phase of the bike lane infrastructure between Meloneras and Pasito Blanco. Furthermore, work on the basic urban utility networks has been delegated to the specialized company Canaragua, which is responsible for connecting the Municipal Market to the general sewage and telecommunications networks.
The public-private governance structure in southern Gran Canaria interprets this investment effort as an essential step to sustain residential rental values and the profitability per available room in the hotel sector. Local authorities, represented by the Island Council and the Department of Urban Planning, recognize that the quality of public spaces has a multiplier effect on private investment, stimulating renovations of established resorts in Playa del Inglés.
