The San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council will launch two teams made up of people over 60 years old to participate in the Canary Islands Neurolympics 2026, an initiative promoted by the Neurolympic Association with the support of the Ministry of Education and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands

 

The presentation of this initiative took place in the El Tablero Sports Pavilion, with the participation of Mayor, Marco Aurelio Pérez Sánchez; the Councillor for Sports, Ramón Suárez, and one of the project's driving forces, Oscar MoralesDuring the event, it was explained that the municipality will have a total of 30 places, divided into two teams of 15 members, one based in San Fernando and another The Board.


The goal is for both teams to be formed before mid-July to begin preparations for the island phase of the competition. Beyond the competitive aspect, the program aims to improve participants' quality of life, foster socialization, and combat the isolation that can affect some older adults.


Mayor Marco Aurelio Pérez He emphasized that the initiative is not solely aimed at achieving sporting results, but also at providing a tool to promote healthy habits and encourage the active participation of seniors in the social life of the municipality. He also expressed his gratitude for the collaboration of Social Foundation of the Las Palmas Football Federation in the development of the island phase of Gran Canaria and recalled that the City Council will provide the sports facilities and the necessary transport for travel during the competition.

 

The Neurolympics were born in 2021 in the Tenerife municipality of Santa Ursula And since then, they have experienced continuous growth, spreading to practically the entire archipelago. Currently, each island holds its own qualifying round, and the winning teams advance to a grand regional final that travels to different locations, which this year will take place in the municipality of Pájara, Fuerteventura.
