Nighttime roadworks on the GC-1 motorway: the Island Council is resurfacing 17 kilometers between Melenara and Vecindario

 

The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, Architecture and Housing of the Gran Canaria Island Council , under the direction of Vice President Augusto Hidalgo , will begin next Monday, July 20, the complete renewal of the asphalt on the 17 kilometers of the three lanes of the southbound carriageway of the GC-

1. This section runs from Melenara (Telde) to Vecindario (Santa Lucía de Tirajana) , including access to Gran Canaria Airport.

The work will be carried out at night, between 22:30 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., Monday through Thursday for ten consecutive nights. The main objective is to minimize traffic disruptions on a road that carries an average daily traffic ( ADT ) of between 55.000 and 80.000 vehicles, making it the main road in the south of the island.

 

 

 

Phases and planned detours for renewing the asphalt of the GC-1

 

The work to renew the asphalt will be carried out in phases:

• The first phase will cover the area from the Melenara Junction to Salinetas, affecting two kilometers where the GC-1 southbound will be completely closed from the Melenara Junction onwards. Drivers will have to detour through Melenara and Salinetas to rejoin the highway.

• In the second phase, the works will extend from El Goro to the Las Puntillas roundabout (Ingenio), passing by the airport. Detours will be in place via exit 13 towards Ojos de Garza (GC-195) and subsequent rejoining via Las Puntillas.

• The third phase will be the longest: from Las Puntillas to Vecindario. Here, detours will be made via exit 18 towards Carrizal-Ingenio, continuing along the GC-191 to Balos and Vecindario to rejoin the highway via Avenida del Atlántico.

 

Throughout the process, signs will be installed at the affected intersections to properly guide drivers regarding the staggered closures as each phase progresses.

 

 

Technical details and citizen collaboration during the works in Gran Canaria

 

This rehabilitation project involves removing the deteriorated pavement, laying a new asphalt surface with five centimeters of bituminous mix, and restoring all road markings upon completion of the work. The planned investment amounts to approximately €500.000 , earmarked exclusively for improving this strategic section of road for island traffic.

 

The Ministry requests the full cooperation of all users who travel through this area during the affected nights and insists on following all instructions provided by both signage and technical personnel present at the construction site.

 

It is worth remembering that a similar intervention was already carried out last year on these same sections but in the northbound direction, with an additional investment of close to 600.000 euros , thus consolidating a continued commitment to the optimal maintenance of the main road infrastructures in Gran Canaria.
