The Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium has launched the first phase of improvements to the GC-500 highway, specifically the section between El Hornillo and Pasito Blanco. This strategic project aims to improve mobility and urban modernization in southern Gran Canaria. The initial phase has a base budget of €2.447.670, funds earmarked for a radical transformation of the appearance and functionality of this vital road for residents and visitors in the southern part of the island.

The planned project involves the complete redevelopment of one kilometer of this road corridor, incorporating urban planning solutions focused on sustainable mobility and universal accessibility. The technical project details the construction of continuous sidewalks and separate bike lanes, key elements for organizing pedestrian and cyclist traffic in an area with high tourist traffic. Two new roundabouts will also be built to improve traffic flow and road safety at intersections along the affected section.

The design of the renovated public space includes rest areas located next to public transport stops, specific amenities such as bicycle parking, the installation of pergolas to provide shade, and the complete replacement of the current lighting system with more efficient and environmentally friendly LED technology. These improvements aim to enhance urban comfort along this coastal area of the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, combining tourism with the well-being of local residents.

The San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council will fully fund this important project, supporting its development as part of its investments to improve the municipality's public spaces and infrastructure. The administrative process for contracting the work is now underway, with a deadline of August 4th for submitting bids. This date marks the end of the public tender period for awarding the project contract.
