The General Directorate of Emergencies declares a pre-alert throughout the Autonomous Community from 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 29, due to an episode of high temperatures that will especially affect Gran Canaria.
The Government of the Canary Islands has declared a pre-alert status for high temperatures throughout the Autonomous Community , effective from 11:00 AM on Wednesday, July 29, 2026 , due to the forecast of a multi-day heatwave . This measure is being adopted in accordance with the Canary Islands' Special Plan for the Environment (PEFMA) and based on official weather forecasts.
The heatwave will begin with greater intensity in the eastern islands , especially Gran Canaria , due to the arrival of a mass of warm, dry air from Africa . Temperatures of 34°C or higher are expected in inland areas and mid-altitude zones facing south and west of the island, where temperatures could reach nearly 38°C as the heatwave progresses.
Temperatures of up to 33ºC are also expected in the interior of Fuerteventura and between 32 and 33ºC in inland areas of Tenerife , with the episode gradually spreading to the rest of the archipelago.
The situation will be accompanied by a low temperature inversion and weak haze , mainly in the eastern islands, with no significant concentrations of surface dust expected initially.
The Directorate General of Emergencies will maintain continuous monitoring of the weather situation and reminds the public of the importance of following self-protection advice, staying hydrated, avoiding sun exposure during the middle of the day, and paying special attention to the most vulnerable groups.
