The Mogán City Council has definitively unblocked the urban planning process for a new commercial project in southern Gran Canaria. The Strategic Environmental Assessment Commission for Urban Development Plans of the Mogán council unanimously approved, in its session held on July 15, 2026, the Strategic Environmental Report regarding the minor modification promoted by the developer Lidl Supermarkets, SAU. The resolution was signed by the secretary, Higinio Suárez, and endorsed by the acting mayor, Rayco Guerra.
The project focuses on the Loma II area in Arguineguín. The urban development is technically structured as a provisioning project, consisting of modifying the classification, category, and land use of the aforementioned plot, changing it from developed tourist urban land to undeveloped urban land for residential use. This also includes a detailed redesign of the road network and the access roundabout. This modification aims to recognize the existing urban consolidation of this area and provide the residential zone of Arguineguín with new commercial and service infrastructure.
The simplified strategic environmental procedure, initiated at the request of the City Council following the application submitted at the end of March 2026, has successfully completed the mandatory consultation process with public administrations and interested parties over a period of 45 business days. After gathering the relevant sectoral reports, the file includes highly favorable assessments, highlighting the absence of any impact on protected natural areas or the Natura 2000 network. Furthermore, the competent road departments of the Gran Canaria Island Council confirmed that the project does not interfere with roads under its jurisdiction, while the Ministry of Defense issued a final favorable report within the framework of the national environmental assessment regulations.
The environmental authority's technical conclusion determines the absence of significant negative environmental impacts, as the project is being developed within an already established and urbanized area. The report makes the development of the plan contingent upon strict compliance with the corrective measures outlined in the Strategic Environmental Document and the relevant sectoral conditions. With this strategic endorsement, the commercial project promoted by Lidl in Arguineguín is moving towards final approval, further solidifying the expansion of food distribution areas in the residential areas of the tourist municipality of Mogán.
