The streets and public spaces of southern Gran Canaria will undergo a visible transformation in their public safety operations. Personnel from the 50th Canary Islands Infantry Regiment of the Spanish Army have begun deploying across the island to conduct patrols on foot and in tactical vehicles.
The land deployment is under the direction of Lieutenant General Julio Salom Herrera, head of the Canary Islands Command of the Spanish Army, who simultaneously serves as Commander of the Land Operations Command. His responsibilities encompass planning presence and surveillance operations in the Canary Islands archipelago, as well as in the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla and the Balearic Islands, while maintaining fluid coordination channels at all times with the relevant civil and military authorities in each region.
This measure, officially announced by the Canary Islands Command, has the main objective of strengthening surveillance, exerting an effective deterrent effect and guaranteeing the comprehensive protection of land areas under national sovereignty in island territory, paying special attention to areas with high population density and tourist resorts in the south of the island.
The missions to be carried out by the military personnel fall within the framework of what are known as Permanent Operations. This strategic framework constitutes one of the most significant contributions of the Armed Forces to national security during peacetime, enabling a proactive response to any eventuality that could compromise territorial stability. The Canary Islands Command has emphasized that these types of operational deployments not only ensure effective monitoring of the geographical area, but also foster a thorough and direct understanding of the terrain and the complex social realities of the islands.
The presence of troops in the most popular municipalities and tourist areas of southern Gran Canaria also aims to foster the integration of military personnel within the local community, both residents and visitors. This institutional approach seeks to strengthen the existing bond between the Armed Forces and the public, projecting an image of closeness and constant protection.
