The urban transformation of southern Gran Canaria has officially begun with the start of excavation work on the iconic and long-abandoned site of the former Viajes Insular building, located on the strategic border between the urban center of San Fernando de Maspalomas and the tourist area of Playa del Inglés, right next to the GC-500 highway. Two powerful backhoes are already operating on the site, moving earth and loading trucks, marking the beginning of the realization of a large-scale commercial project that has been in development since the developers obtained the municipal license in October 2024.
Developed by Isla del Paraíso 200 SL, the shopping complex represents a historic financial boost for the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The project involves a total investment of €48 million and covers a total area exceeding 60.000 square meters, with an estimated completion time of two and a half years.
The shopping center's architectural design will be structured around a large central plaza at street level, parallel to Alcalde Enrique Jorge, crowned by a spacious courtyard that widens with each floor. The layout has been designed to optimize each level, integrating the main retail offerings, management offices, wide central corridors, common areas, and shared services on the ground floor and upper levels, while the basement and mezzanine levels will house additional retail spaces, technical facilities, and specialized logistics services.
Meanwhile, the underground level will house additional commercial establishments, storage areas, a waste recycling center, access ramps and common operational services, all complemented by a large underground parking lot with 864 underground parking spaces to facilitate mass accessibility for visitors and customers.
Beyond the urban impact of removing the historic, dilapidated site, demolished at the end of 2013, the complex aims to completely revitalize the commercial waterfront of San Fernando facing Playa del Inglés. In terms of employment, the infrastructure will significantly boost the job market in the south of the island, creating a total of 520 jobs. Of these, 30 will be direct positions in management, security, cleaning, and maintenance, while the remaining 490 will be divided into 110 jobs related to the future hypermarket and 380 jobs generated by the network of shops and commercial establishments operating within the center.
