Gran Canaria Bike Team exhibition at the Vuelta al Bajo Aragón

 

The Gran Canaria Bike Team returns from Aragon with the most important result of its season. Néstor Herrera was crowned champion of the 42nd Vuelta al Bajo Aragón, one of the most traditional cadet races on the national calendar, after holding the yellow jersey from the first stage to the fourth and final stage in Caspe.

 

 

Herrera's triumph was accompanied by an outstanding collective performance from the Gran Canaria team, which finished third in the overall team classification, only behind the Sorex Cycling Team (Belgium) and the GD Piñero Martínez Motor BM from Murcia.

 

The Vuelta brought together 32 teams and 200 riders, forming a high-level peloton in which, in addition to the main Spanish teams, there was a significant international presence with representatives from seven countries: Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, the United Kingdom, Argentina and Mexico.

 

Winning in this setting, against the best national teams and riders from different parts of Europe and the world, is therefore a particularly significant result for cycling in Gran Canaria.

 

Yellow from the first stage

 

Herrera began the Vuelta in imperious fashion. The rider from Teror won the first stage , between Maella and Caspe, leading a long breakaway and becoming the first leader of the race. Furthermore, the Gran Canaria Bike Team was the best team of the day.

 

From that moment on, the real work of the Gran Canaria team began: defending their lead.

 

With Néstor leading the team, his teammates had to shoulder a significant responsibility throughout the four stages. The team monitored the movements of their rivals, kept a watchful eye on breakaways, and remained vigilant for any riders who could pose a threat to the overall classification. The objective was clear: to prevent any breakaway or tactical maneuver from jeopardizing the yellow jersey.

 

The second stage , an individual time trial in Chiprana, changed the landscape of the competition. Swiss rider Thibaut Beckers, of the Isorex Cycling Team, took the victory, but Herrera retained the overall lead. Pablo Álvarez also put in a strong performance in the time trial and remained near the front of the pack.

 

On the third day , between Fabara and Nonaspe, the situation was different again. The victory went to Juan Bastida of GD Piñero Martínez Motor BM, but Herrera finished in the leading group and maintained his overall lead.

 

The fourth and final stage , starting and finishing in Caspe, was the last chance for the rivals. Aitor Ros Ruiz, from El Nieto del Lobo-Nutriban (Murcia), took the victory, but the overall lead remained with the GCBT rider.

 

Herrera thus completed the four stages as leader. From the first stage to the last, he never relinquished the yellow jersey.

 

A team at the service of the leader

 

Néstor Herrera's result cannot be separated from the work of his teammates, all of them from Gran Canaria: Pablo Álvarez (Agüimes), Asier Álvarez (Telde), Ayose Robaina González (Telde) and Álvaro Gómez Bethencourt (Agüimes).

 

Each rider assumed their role within a common strategy to defend the leader. The work of control, surveillance, and protection was fundamental for Herrera to maintain his advantage until the end. This constant struggle yielded extra rewards: Pablo Álvarez and Asier Álvarez finished 4th and 9th respectively among the first-year cadets, and the team finished 3rd in the overall standings, which, it should be remembered, consisted of 32 teams.

 

A job well done

 

For the Gran Canaria Bike Team, the result is further confirmation of the work carried out throughout the season. The sports management, led by Yojanán Reyes, once again designed a race in which the riders responded with a level of performance and competitiveness typical of higher categories.

 

 

Five young cyclists from Gran Canaria, competing far from home against the best Spanish teams and a significant international field, return with a victory in the overall standings and a third place for teams.

 

Herrera's result is the most visible aspect, but behind the yellow jersey is the work of the entire team. It's a style of competition that GCBT is consolidating race after race, proving once again that grassroots cycling in Gran Canaria can compete and win at the highest level, even outside the islands.
