The projects are clinical and industrial research, and have a budget of 300.000 euros and 95.000 euros respectively.
The Vice President and Minister of Public Works, Infrastructure, Transport and Mobility of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Miguel Ángel Pérez del Pino, presented this Friday at the Rectorate of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) the two subsidized research projects by Vice-Presidency of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria with an amount of 395.000 euros in total.
The Vice President explained that the objective of these subsidies is “to promote research and encourage Gran Canaria talent so that they can stay at our public university and develop scientific and technological careers and research in general, and that the work of the researchers will benefit the society".
The subsidies granted by the Vice Presidency of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria to the ULPGC are intended for two research projects: the first, led by the researcher Carmen Paz, will have an aid of 300.000 euros that will be invested "not only in materials but also in which the qualified personnel of the Island can carry out their work on their land and advance in the development of intelligent systems to help the diagnosis and prognosis of diseases such as Covid-19 or Alzheimer's over a period of 3 years," Miguel detailed. The second project, directed by Agustín Trujillo, will receive a subsidy of 95.000 euros that will allow the Center for Image Technologies (CTIM), a research and development center belonging to the ULPGC, to carry out a mathematical analysis of images using cameras and computer vision over a period of two years. The Vice President has stressed that in this way “we promote industrial research and at the same time alleviate the damage suffered by Canarian research, which in the previous crisis, in 2009, lost 10 percentage points of public investment in research. The Cabildo understands that our public university and the reference research groups, which are world leaders in many of their areas, must be supported so that they can defend the image of Gran Canaria wherever they go."
For his part, the Rector of the ULPGC, Lluís Serra Majem, has celebrated that “the fruitful collaboration with the Cabildo of Gran Canaria gives rise to projects that promote the empowerment of new researchers in emerging areas and that help find solutions to large diseases and environmental problems that we have on the Island.”
