The eighth edition of the international festival known as Music Meets Tourism (MMT), held in Maspalomas in the summer of 2026, was characterized not only by its usual fusion of music, fashion, and tourism, but also by a notable advocacy campaign in favor of protecting the Maspalomas Dunes. Under the slogan "Your gaze, the only footprint," the event highlighted the fragility of this unique ecosystem, seriously threatened by the constant trampling of tourists and visitors, despite its status as a protected natural area.
The initiative, which has gone relatively unnoticed by the general public, takes on special significance when considering the business background behind the festival's organization. MMT is organized by Viajes Canarias Europa, an entity with deep business ties to German capital, as evidenced by the management and auditing positions associated with the company, including Gerald Kassner of Schauinsland Reisen and other administrators such as Arno Richartz.
This connection between a key sector of the tourism industry, with a strong presence of foreign capital, and an environmental protest in the heart of the dunes, reveals a complex and curious paradox: the need to protect the natural environment that sustains the tourism activity itself.
The "symbolic booing", according to the official statement distributed in Madrid, starring Elisabeth Reyes, Cristina Rodríguez and Gema Fernández, contestants of MMT 2025 and the organization of the festival, seeks to mobilize social awareness about the need for responsible tourism, capable of enjoying and celebrating without leaving a negative footprint on the planet.
The festival, the tour operator says, is thus positioning itself as a voice for important causes, reaffirming its philosophy of "traveling, enjoying, and celebrating" in harmony with the environment, and becoming a benchmark for corporate social responsibility within the tourism sector. The protest, spearheaded by a key player in the industry, underscores the urgent need to adopt effective measures to guarantee the preservation of the Maspalomas Dunes, a natural icon of Gran Canaria and a sanctuary for unique species that is at serious risk of degradation.
