The profile of the German tourist in Maspalomas in 2026: A dashboard for upcoming trade fairs

The German tourism market has reaffirmed its historical position as the fundamental and indispensable pillar of the holiday industry in Gran Canaria, registering exceptional and unprecedented performance during the first half of 2026. According to the official data from the Gran Canaria Tourism interactive control panel, the island received a total of 3.450.000 tourists from Germany between January and June of this year.

This figure not only consolidates Germany, by a huge margin, as the main source market for visitors to the island, but also represents an 8% year-on-year growth compared to the same period of the previous year, far exceeding the most optimistic expectations of the sector and consolidating the total recovery after years of global uncertainty.

This massive and constant influx of German visitors is of paramount importance to the island's economy, acting as a true engine of stability and growth. German tourists are among the most profitable profiles for the destination, not only due to their volume but also because of their excellent quality indicators.

Firstly, they stand out for their long average stay of 12 days, which exponentially increases their economic impact compared to markets focused on shorter breaks. Furthermore, they have above-average spending per tourist, guaranteeing substantial and welcome revenue for the entire tourism value chain, from accommodation providers to restaurants and local businesses, with an estimated direct revenue of over €1.800 billion in this first half of the year alone.

The impact is especially noticeable in the south of Gran Canaria, areas such as Maspalomas, Meloneras, Playa del Inglés and Puerto Rico, which continue to be the epicenter of German tourist preference, where hotel and non-hotel occupancy has remained above 85% for much of these six months thanks to this market.

Another indicator of the health and strategic importance of the German market is its customer loyalty rate, which reaches 65%. This exceptionally high percentage demonstrates a deep and lasting satisfaction with Gran Canaria as a holiday destination, based on a well-established value proposition and an offering that perfectly meets their expectations. This loyalty is not a matter of chance, but rather the result of decades of promotion and close collaboration between German tour operators and the Gran Canaria tourism sector.

The data broken down by Gran Canaria Tourism also allows us to draw a clear and up-to-date profile of the German tourist who visits us. Far from being a homogeneous market, there is a clear distribution by age, with 60% of German visitors falling between the ages of 30 and 60.

This indicates a segment of the working population with solid purchasing power and a clear predisposition to spend during their holidays. The report also reveals the main motivations that drive Germans to choose Gran Canaria, which remain firmly at the top of their priorities: the climate (cited by 90% of respondents), the beach and natural environment (80%), and safety (70%).

This detailed and comprehensive understanding of the German tourist profile is an invaluable tool for the local tourism sector, both public and private. It allows for the refinement of marketing strategies, the adaptation of services and experiences, and the continued competitiveness of the island as a preferred, high-quality destination in the complex and ever-changing European market, ensuring that the tourism relationship between Gran Canaria and Germany continues to write successful chapters in the future.
