San Roque University Hospitals in Maspalomas successfully performed a traumatological knee prosthesis surgery this past Thursday, led by Dr. Edwin Pantaleón, with the particularity that it is a computer-based knee prosthesis with a new navigation system.

The patient is 62 years old and had a very severe knee deformity secondary to a fracture in her youth. Her pathology could have been resolved in a traditional way, but this new navigation system guarantees a better outcome. The patient is progressing well and is already recovering.

Dr. Edwin Pantaleón comments that “Navigated prosthesis surgery as such is not a new technique by any means, it is something that has been used for years and has been proven to provide excellent results compared to traditional surgery, especially in patients who present significant deformities or very severe alterations in the joint. Navigated knee surgery, with previous systems, presents great advantages, but also several setbacks, such as the fact that performing it considerably lengthened the surgical time and required larger wounds than conventional ones, which is why it has never been widely used by doctors. specialists. The difference in surgery with this new navigation system is that it is much simpler and more intuitive than what was previously used, it does not require expanding the surgical approach nor does it cause a prolongation of the time in the intervention, allowing this type of surgery to be performed much more quickly. simple and fast, achieving results that are clearly better in terms of function and recovery time in patients with complex knee pathology. Thanks to this system, serious defects can be corrected quickly and with exceptional functional results.”

"We are developing this intervention as part of the pilot training plan for navigated surgery for the entire Canary Islands, for which we have been chosen as the main center, and which we hope to be able to start from September-October of this year with the first course. in corpses of this type organized on the islands, in order to expand this knowledge to the rest of the archipelago” confirms the doctor.
