The municipalities of Agüimes, Ingenio and Santa Lucía request the voluntary collaboration of collective dining rooms in educational centers and social-care centers
The Commonwealth of the Southeast of Gran Canaria launches the “Environmental awareness campaign towards the selective collection of organic waste in establishments”. This initiative, which will last three months, aims to provide large and medium-sized waste producers with the necessary support to collaborate in the recycling of organic waste produced in the region. The ultimate goal of the action is to transform this waste into organic fertilizer.
The municipalities of Agüimes, Ingenio and Santa Lucía request the voluntary collaboration of collective canteens in educational centers and social-care centers as well as the participation of food businesses and public facilities. One of the objectives of this campaign is to increase the recycling rate of the municipal organic fraction to transform it into compost, a very useful organic fertilizer for use in agriculture, gardening and catering.
Establishments that register for the campaign, which will last 3 months, will benefit from a series of free actions. Once the establishment has registered, a meeting will be arranged to inform you in detail about the characteristics of the waste collection service and the campaign managed by the company Achigea. This initial evaluation and advice process will also serve to assess the needs of the establishment and identify the resources and support it needs to participate in the selective collection of organic waste.
Each establishment will be provided with the necessary containers to separate the organic waste they generate. For this purpose, there is a stock of containers of different capacities: 120 liters and 10 liters. In parallel, information and training actions will be developed to train establishment agents to participate in selective separation. The target audience for these actions is administration and service staff, teachers, students, users of socio-educational and care facilities, educators, food establishment staff, etc.
Door to door
One of the new aspects is the launch of a “door-to-door” waste collection service. To do this, a weekly calendar will be established in which the establishment will deliver the organic waste to the authorized manager. This delivery will be made to the establishment itself or to the “ecological island” closest to it. Subsequently, this waste will be transferred to the Gran Canaria Sur Ecopark to transform it into compost. The educational team will accompany the establishment in the process of implementing selective waste collection, offering support to resolve doubts and resolve possible difficulties that arise. Finally, if the establishment successfully completes the process, an accreditation vinyl will be offered as well as the dissemination of the good practices implemented through the Internet. In this way, the aim is to have a positive impact on the corporate social image of the establishments.
Since 2019, the Southeast Commonwealth has been developing efforts to implement the collection of organic waste in homes. The “organic container” is already a reality in 25 pilot neighborhoods, currently with more than 1.800 households that voluntarily participate in selective collection. Following these advances, the aim is to take another step towards sustainability by inviting large and medium-sized producers to participate.

The increase in the collection rate of organic waste and its subsequent transformation into compost will prevent a large amount of waste from ending up in the landfill, and in this way, the Southeastern Commonwealth takes a new transition step towards the Circular Economy and The carbon footprint of La Comarca is reduced and progress is made towards the recycling objectives set by the European Union.
