What does the garbage in Juan Grande have to do with Lidl?

The ordeal of the Juan Grande waste management plant has had something to do with Lidl for a few months now. This is where Las Palmas, during the PP era, wanted Tirajana to manage waste from municipalities like Telde, which are closer to the Salto del Negro Ecopark than Tirajana. This plant has Prezero as its managing entity in the south of Gran Canaria and this German company entered Spain in 2021. The German capital bought the plant and shares the owner with Lidl, the hard discount supermarket chain that sells more in Las Palmas but would liquidate IGIC in Tenerife.

The environmental company controlled by the German group Swartz will manage this facility until 2029 and is expected to grow from 928.000 meters, with which the discharge capacity will increase from 1,44 to 2,37 million cubic meters before 2030. In December In 2021, the owner of Lidl, a Schwarz Group company, entered the Environment business in Spain and Portugal after purchasing Cespa. The price of the shares sold amounts to 1.032 million euros. Ferrovial earned 330 million euros in this operation, which included, among others, the transfer of the waste treatment businesses in Juan Grande and Salto del Negro.

Lidl has been in the Canary Islands for just over 10 years. In 2020, the company invested more than 55 million euros in its expansion project on the islands, which resulted in the launch of its second logistics platform. A warehouse, which came into operation in mid-2020 and is located in Agüimes to house 21.000 pallets of merchandise and its more than 25.000 square meters serve the establishments that Lidl has throughout Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

With the Schwarz Group, Aldi, Edeka, Rewe and Metro, German retailers are the defining force in Europe's top ten. With the exception of Metro, its entire domain is expanding. However, none of them can match Amazon's growth momentum. With a 6,3% increase in gross sales, the Neckarsulm-based discount giant (Schwarz Group) was able to expand its position as Europe's number one thanks to the efficiency and thoroughness of its distribution systems, according to Lebensmittel Zeitung. .
