The Department of Health of the City Council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana activates, starting today, Monday, March 7, and until next Saturday, March 11, the sterilization campaign of the existing cat colonies in the municipality.
As the head of the Area, Clara Martel, explained, “last Friday we held the coordination meeting to define the capture, sterilization and release operation, with representatives of the College of Veterinarians of Las Palmas, municipal technicians, those responsible for ARICAN, as well as eight municipal neighborhood managers”. Martel thanked the predisposition of the public and private institutions and entities involved.
During the meeting, the experts explained the method of capturing the felines, using cages set up for this purpose that have been located in points where the existence of cat colonies has been detected. Once captured, they will be transferred to the ULPGC Veterinary Faculty, located in Bañaderos, where the paramedics will proceed to sterilize them, subsequently transfer them and release them into their habitats.
Taking into account that the reproductive cycle of cats can reach four litters of five kittens in just one year, "hence the importance of acting preventively, with the sterilization of specimens," said Martel.
The control of specimens is essential to prevent their impact on the flora and fauna of the municipality, as well as to guarantee more dignified living conditions for them.
