Narváez: “We want to instill in the student population of the municipality the principles of environmental culture and sustainability, as stated in the 2030 Agenda”
Nearly 600 students from secondary schools located in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana are participating today in the 'I Conference on the Culture of Sustainability. Applied Science at the service of the sustainable development of the Canary Islands, an initiative promoted by the Department of the Presidency of the municipality headed by Antonio Pérez, in collaboration with the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC).
Conferences that were inaugurated this morning by Mayor Conchi Narváez, at the Maspalomas House of Culture, together with senior officials from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, who thanked and recognized those responsible for the ULPGC for the great success in organizing this event.
The impact of this event is of utmost relevance for the student community, as the first mayor highlighted: “As the highest representative of this municipality, I have set a priority task: Instill in the students of our municipality the principles of the culture of sustainability, as stated by the UN itself in the 2030 Agenda, in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”
A few days aimed not only at students, but also at encouraging the involvement of teachers from Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) and Baccalaureate centres.
The role of the ULPGC, crucial in training
The ultimate intention of this forum “is to collaborate in comprehensive education, for the benefit of our municipal students, focused on the role that applied science provides to the socio-economic and environmental well-being of our society,” said councilor Antonio Pérez.
'The contributions of Marine Sciences to the environmental sustainability of the Canary Islands, in the context of a planetary state of Climate Urgency', was the title of the inaugural presentation, given by the vice-rector of Degrees, Postgraduates and new Degrees of the ULPGC, Luis Hernandez Calvento.
For their part, the dean of the Faculty of Marine Sciences, María Esther Torres, and the president of the Canary Islands Committee of Experts on Climate Change, Aridane González, also spoke and contributed their vision regarding the present and environmental future of the planet.
'The University curricular contents of the Degree in Marine Sciences' were developed and explained to the students by the dean and vice-dean of Marine Sciences, María Esther Torres and María del Pilar García, respectively.
Next, four researchers linked to the Atlantic Society of Oceanographers, presented, through talks and audiovisual presentations, the work they are currently developing in this matter.
The Maspalomas Natural Reserve, object of analysis
Tomorrow, Thursday, it is planned to analyze and debate on 'Applied Geography and its role in Sustainable Management and Territory Planning'. Specifically, the role of research in the Maspalomas Dunes Natural Reserve will be delved into.
Around noon, the closing ceremony of the Conference will take place, led by the Councilor for the Presidency and Environmental Policies of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Antonio Pérez; the General Director of the Environment of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Manuel Amador Jiménez; the Councilor for Attention and Care of the Coast, Samuel Henríquez Quintana, and the dean of the Faculty of Geography and History, Pedro González.
