The Commonwealth of the Southeast inaugurated this Tuesday a new composting area where organic waste and pruning remains will be processed to make compost that will be used to fertilize parks and public gardens and will also be given to farmers in the community. The new composting area is located in the Santa Lucía de Tirajana ravine and has 28 containers, in total in the three municipalities of the community there will be 56 containers in the three composting areas.

The new community composting area of Santa Lucía de Tirajana is located in the Barranco de Tirajana, in front of the Therapeutic Community and next to the City Council nurseries. This area has 24 composting containers and 4 containers for storing pruning waste. The municipalities of Ingenio and Agüimes will each have 12 composting containers and 2 for storing pruning waste. All remains will enter a process with three different composting methods.

The mayor of Santa Lucía de Tirajana and president of the Southeastern Commonwealth, Francisco García, stated that “Last year, around 135.000 kilos of organic waste were collected in the three municipalities of the Commonwealth, which after being transformed into compost became 75.000 kilos to be distributed among the parks and gardens and residents of the community.” The first mayor of Santa Lucía added that “the investment in this project has 56.000 euros, of which 16.800 euros are contributed by the Ministry of Ecological Transition through the Department of Ecological Transition within the Plan to Promote the Environment through waste. ”.

In the Commonwealth there are around 200 containers of organic matter, about 50 in Agüimes, another 50 in Ingenio and 100 in Santa Lucía de Tirajana. The mayor of Ingenio, Ana Hernández, stated that “citizen awareness is important, in addition to making these containers available to citizens, residents must be aware that at home we must separate the waste we generate and that it is essential to carry "Things done well, with products that do not interrupt processes." The Councilor for Health, Consumption and Waste of Agüimes, Adela Alemán stated that “the 50 containers we have in the municipality are working very well, especially in Arinaga, which is where there is the most population.”
