The initiative aims to inform and raise awareness among the population about the prejudices promoted by certain political ideologies.
Truthful and objective information is increasingly necessary to dismantle the hoaxes and prejudices that in recent times have been spreading against social organizations that fight for equality. This is the premise of the project 'Making knowledge visible', promoted by the Equality area of the Agüimes City Council, which offers a complete documentary collection on the past, present and future of both feminism and the LGTBI+ movement, an extensive compilation of books, scientific articles, research, references and audiovisual resources.
It is about making available to the population all the information about the achievements made by society in effective equality between men and women or in the consideration and non-discrimination of homosexual, transsexual, transgender, bisexual, intersex and non-binary people. The different materials, available on the municipal website (www.agüimes.es), allow us to remember the achievements achieved throughout history, review some of the situations of discrimination or violation of rights that still exist in different parts of the world and keep in mind the enormous task that still lies ahead to continue advancing in equality and social rights.
In recent years, under the protection of certain extremist political ideologies, a current of thought has been proliferating – luckily a minority – that questions the progress made in gender equality, threatening with the rupture of the broad social consensus reached on this matter. . Faced with the social regression that this would entail, 'Making knowledge visible' is presented as a knowledge platform that is committed to valuing the work carried out by feminists and LGTBI+ activists in favor of equality and respect for diversity.
The platform was born with the desire to guide, inform and raise awareness, especially among the younger population. In fact, it is conceived as a pedagogical resource available to educational centers, in the conviction that social advances must be defended and promoted in school from a very early age. It is also a tool for social entities and agents who wish to delve deeper into feminism or the LGTBI+ movement.
