There is a broad consensus that, as of 2001, the Canary Islands, one of the main European destinations specialized in sun and beach holiday tourism, reached its stage of maturity and was facing a possible situation of decline or stagnation that could lead us to an economic and social situation that is truly difficult to sustain due to the important contribution of tourism to the economy of the islands and the enormous generation of employment in said sector, more than 37%.

We have paradigmatic cases promoted by the latest Improvement and Modernization Plans on the island of Gran Canaria and more specifically in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, such as the last 39 accommodation establishments that took advantage of the improvement and modernization plan and achieved such successes. recognized as those of Santa Mónica Suites Hotel or the Hotel Nayra, both establishments went from being one-key non-hotel complexes to superior 4-star hotels and today are classified at the top of the rankings of tour operators and companies specialized in tourist communication and its economic and labor profitability has multiplied by 4 or 5.
