The priority works in the southern area of Gran Canaria affect the health centers of Maspalomas, Jinámar, Ingenio and the local clinic in Balos, among others.
The Minister of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, Blas Trujillo, reported today in the Parliamentary Health Commission on the planned works on the health infrastructure in the south of Gran Canaria, actions that will involve an estimated investment of around 19,1 million euros. in Primary Care and to which we must add the improvements planned in the health centers of the rest of the care levels in this area of the Island.
During his speech, the regional councilor explained that these works are contemplated in the Health Infrastructure Plan of the Canarian Health Service (SCS) for 2021-2025, which “is allowing us an orderly programming of investments in infrastructure and equipment in Primary Care and Specialized Care throughout the Archipelago, for the expansion and improvement of the network of public care centers.”
The General Directorate of Economic Resources, the Primary Care Management and the Management Directorates of the two hospital complexes of Gran Canaria, have been the entities in charge of analyzing and determining the necessary and priority investments in the health infrastructures of the Island.
Improvements by care levels
The SCS Health Infrastructure Plan incorporates a total of 19 actions in health centers in the south of Gran Canaria with an estimated investment of 19,1 million euros. These improvements include those planned for the Maspalomas, Jinámar, Ingenio health centers and the local Balos clinic, among others.
To these works, we must add another 19 actions in Specialized Care centers, such as those that will be carried out in the Telde Specialized Care Center.
The Ministry of Health also plans to make different improvements in hospital centers. In this sense, Blas Trujillo explained that, currently, the works of the In Vitro Fertilization and Pediatric Dentistry Unit of the Insular-Maternal and Child University Hospital Complex are being carried out, awarded for 2,6 million euros; in addition to the planned expansion of the Gran Canaria Insular Hospital, which is the one that corresponds to the southern area of Gran Canaria, through the CULP.
Expansion of the Maspalomas and Ingenio health centers
Other priority works planned by Health is the expansion of the Maspalomas and Ingenio health centers. In the first case, technicians from the SCS Infrastructure Service plan to analyze the suitability of the plot that the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council has offered for said work.
Regarding the Ingenio health center, Blas Trujillo explained that both the construction of a new health space and increasing the current health center with a second floor are being evaluated based on the final suitability report. In this sense, he stated that the City Council is willing to transfer the land, but a planning modification process is pending. Although if the problem persists, a second floor would be considered in the current health center.
Mental Health
Likewise, the regional head of the Health area pointed out during the parliamentary Commission that the Ministry contemplates the creation of two hospitalization units in the field of Mental Health, one for those under 18 years of age and another for adults.
Regarding the Emergency Services of Gran Canaria, the Canary Islands Health Emergency Plan (Pluscan) covers three improvement actions on the Island, two of them in the Jinámar and San José health centers and the remaining one in the former Las Palmas University College (CULP).
Beneficiary population
The south of Gran Canaria has 19 Basic Health Zones that encompass 41 Primary Care centers, of which 18 are health centers and 23 are local clinics.
In total, in this geographical area there are 420.764 Individual Health Cards, which add up to a significant floating population that is concentrated in the main tourist centers in the south of the Island.
