The Seminar will present the experiences of The Sustainability Laboratory of New York and the Government of Iceland as international examples of sustainability
The war in Ukraine and the foreign dependence of territories such as the Canary Islands have caused an increase in energy prices in recent months. But is it possible to lower these prices in a sustainable way?
The International Seminar on Sustainable Regions returns next week to the Víctor Jara Theater to answer this question through the contributions of experts such as Alberto Ceña, director of BEPTE and technical advisor to the Wind Business Association (AEE), who will talk about hydrogen as an alternative fuel in the decarbonization of the Canary Islands system.
It is also possible to lower water costs using Artificial Intelligence or emerging technologies in desalination such as direct osmosis, as explained by Pedro Cabrera and Noemí Melián, researchers from the Renewable Energy Systems Research Group at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. . Specifically, Cabrera will explain a pilot test carried out in a small desalination plant in which this technology has been applied to control its energy consumption in real time.
In addition to fuel and water, the Seminar will also address the implementation of offshore wind farms, through the presentation of the technical director of the Wind Business Association (AEE), Tomás Romagosa. This is an area in which Gran Canaria is becoming a benchmark thanks to several ambitious projects that it has already presented to the Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Government of the Canary Islands to install this type of parks on the island.
As examples of international experience, the Seminar will have the presence of two sustainability leaders: on the one hand, the founder of The Sustainability Laboratory of New York and author of the 'Five Basic Principles of Sustainability', Michael Ben-Eli, and on the other hand, Dr. Marta Rós Karlsdóttir, director of the National Energy Authority of Iceland, who will explain how this country has become a model of sustainability and energy efficiency.
The Seminar, which will be held on April 27 and 28, will also host a debate on the dilemma between sustainable development and sustainable balance, led by the doctor in Marine Sciences from the ULPGC, José Juan Castro. On the other hand, the professor of Applied Physics at the University of La Laguna, Jorge Méndez, will talk about "rare earths", the critical minerals found in the Canary Islands and their applications in improving the efficiency of technology and renewable energy.
International meeting point
Once again, the Seminar organized by the municipalities of the Southeast of Gran Canaria -Agüimes, Ingenio and Santa Lucía de Tirajana- becomes a reference meeting point regarding sustainable development and the debate on sustainability from different perspectives .
For two days, national and international experts will participate in this forum for exchanging ideas and experiences on the different aspects and experiences of sustainability.
The International Seminar on Sustainable Regions is open to all those people interested in sustainability in any of its areas (lifestyles, energy, transportation, policies and strategies, circular economy, etc.), for which they can register for free through the seminar website (www.seminariocomarcassostenibles.com).
