Following the approval in the Council of Ministers yesterday, Tuesday, April 19, of the modification of the use of masks in indoor spaces at the request of the Ministry of Health, the Department of Education, Universities, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands has informed the educational centers of the application of said measure in the educational field on the islands, which after its publication in the BOE comes into force today. In any case, those who prefer to continue using it or who are in vulnerable situations that advise it will be allowed to continue using it.
The adoption of this decision by the Ministry of Health occurs because although the pandemic continues to exist, its current characteristics have nothing to do with the beginning of the pandemic due to the current high vaccination coverage.
In this way, the use of masks is no longer mandatory in general in the educational field of the archipelago, and the centers will have special attention to preventing stigma against people who maintain their use in non-obligatory situations, promoting respect for diversity.
Those who present vulnerability factors will use the mask responsibly, both in the case of students and teaching staff, administration and services. People aged six and older must continue to wear masks on school transport.
In Special Education Centers (CEE) with school residences considered as socio-health centers, the use of FFP2 masks by working staff continues to be mandatory. In the Canary Islands they are the CEE and the Siete Palmas School Residence, the El Dorador CEE and the San Miguel School Residence and the CEE and the Hermano Pedro School Residence.
