The commemoration materialized with three events carried out by schoolchildren from the municipality: The release of a turtle on Maspalomas Beach, the planting of trees in the Municipal Urban Garden and the reforestation in the Tony Gallardo Park
On the occasion of the celebration of World Mother Earth Day, which is celebrated today, Friday, the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, in its clear commitment to sustainability, has scheduled a series of actions in which students from the municipality have become into protagonists making visible the need for co-responsibility of citizens in a vital issue for everyone.
The first of them took place this morning, around 9 am, with the planting of trees in the Urban Garden of the Municipal Botanical Garden, by 25 first and second year ESO students from IES Amurga.
Next, already in the Tony Gallardo Park, the students of this educational center dedicated part of the morning to reforestation in this unique natural reserve.
The third of the actions consisted of the return to its natural environment of a specimen of loggerhead turtle (careta-careta), on the beach of Maspalomas, in front of the pond itself. The chelonian, who was rescued several months ago near the coast of Gran Canaria, had different wounds and injuries on his body that prevented him from functioning. After being treated by veterinarians from the Wildlife Recovery Center of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria today, she was finally able to return to the Atlantic Ocean in total freedom.
It means that in this eco-sustainable journey to celebrate Earth Day, several components of the Recovery Center explained to the girls and boys the entire process and treatment that the animals receive from the moment they receive them, many of them with different pathologies and injuries, until they are in a position to release them and reintegrate them into their natural habitat.
This emotional and edifying event, organized by the Departments of Environmental Policies and Education, led by Antonio Pérez and Clara Martel, respectively, was attended by Mayor Conchi Narváez, who highlighted the “decided commitment of this Government Group and the entire Corporation in combat the increasingly evident climate change, as stated in the UN Agenda 2023.” She added that today "is one more activity within a varied set of actions for climate and sustainability."
