Goodbye Hormican: the torture of the residents of Castillo del Romeral and Juan Grande ends

Dácil Santana Tuesday, April 26, 2022

The residents of Castillo del Romeral or Juan Grande, in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, are already breathing a little easier and will soon be able to park their cars or let their children play in the street without the risk of them becoming asthmatic. The Supreme Court has declared illegal the operations of Hormigones Canarios (Hormican), a company owned by people from Las Palmas with industrial businesses in the southern part of the island, because this is what a neighboring municipality denounced before the arrival to power of Narváez's PSOE: Santa Lucia de Tirajana.

The neighbors have been fighting since at least 1985 against this company for its operations on neighboring land and the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, as far as is known, did not appear because it was not their land. Hormican said that Santa Lucía de Tirajana had lost all the documentation proving that it had had a permit since 1985. The lawyer for the residents of Castillo del Romeral and Juan Grande, Antonio Hernández, always made it clear that he did not want to harm employment in the area: " "We never wanted to close the companies, what we wanted was for them to stop polluting."

On April 20, the Administrative Litigation Chamber of the Supreme Court has not admitted for processing the appeal presented by Hormigones Canarios against the TSJC ruling that supported the thesis of the Santa Lucía de Tirajana City Council that, in 2017, approved the prohibition of developing the activity of extraction, distribution and marketing of all types of aggregates and construction and works materials, crushing, classification and production of aggregates in the Tirajana ravine.
