The Environmental Unit of the Mogán Local Police, in collaboration with the Seprona patrol of the Civil Guard of the Neighborhood Post, have arrested two people for crimes of animal abuse. In both cases the animals have been seized, and the pertinent police proceedings have been transferred to the courts.
The first arrest occurred on April 8 following the attack by two dogs on a cat, whose injuries cost it its life while it was being treated at a veterinary center. “A neighbor recorded what happened, to her astonishment she sent us the images and we proceeded to act,” said an agent assigned to the Environment Unit of the Mogán Local Police, who also points out that the owner of the animals had been reported. up to two occasions prior to the events for walking with them in public spaces without using a leash and collar or any other safe restraint system, as stated in the Municipal Ordinance on the Protection and Ownership of Animals. The dogs have been classified as potentially dangerous, so the owner must obtain the corresponding license if he wishes to have them. Failure to do so may result in a fine of up to 6.000 euros.
Citizen collaboration also played a fundamental role in the second case. In the patio of a house, a man kept five dog puppies about two months old, surrounded by several days' worth of excrement, without water and hardly any shade, one of which was dead. “The next-door neighbor was doing repair work at his house and the person in charge saw what was happening,” the agent explained. The animal's corpse was transferred to the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Las Palmas to clarify the causes of death. The person responsible for this crime had the animals in foster care provided by a shelter. He was arrested on April 12.
