The Tourism Advisor of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Carlos Álamo, has highlighted the importance of this certification. Well, it represents a great step towards limiting the environmental impact of the tourism sector while increasing its competitiveness.

The THe Anamar Suites hotel becomes the first company in Gran Canaria to obtain Biosphere certification. Awarded by the Responsible Tourism Institute to those destinations and entities that demonstrate their commitment to sustainability through the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Carlos Álamo, Tourism Councillor of the Gran Canaria Island Council, emphasized the importance of this certification: “The Biosphere Sustainable Destination proposal is progressing well, and we are especially pleased to see the first certifications for a project with great significance for the island from a socio-economic, environmental, and territorial perspective, and which aligns with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and the United Nations' 2030 Agenda.”

“Sustainability criteria are key factors in post-covid tourism and competition between destinations. Therefore, it is a key element as a pole of attraction for new clientele with which to be more competitive and to face the future of the sector with the lowest possible environmental impact.”

“Gran Canaria is a privileged territory with spectacular natural beauty that has much to offer tourists seeking a sustainable experience with immense possibilities, such as astrotourism, our network of trails, our gastronomy, our botanical richness, and the vast potential of our geography and coastline for active leisure. We congratulate the companies for their commitment to the sector and their environmental responsibility ,” Álamo concludes.

Likewise, another 47 companies on the island have already made the commitment and are working to obtain certification. This involvement in sustainability occurs within the framework of the commitment that the island acquired at the end of 2021 through the Cabildo of Gran Canaria and Turismo de Gran Canaria.

Biosphere offers a platform where interested companies and administrations can register and access a certification system that is based on a set of simple standards that establish specific, identifiable and measurable objectives.

The Biosphere Destination Community, certified by UNESCO, the World Tourism Organization and part of an entity dependent on the United Nations, is presented as a meeting point for destinations committed to sustainability and that implement practices to support natural and cultural heritage, to social values and economic benefits for its community, through a more efficient and innovative use of its resources.
