A hundred people participate in a popular 500-meter swim, between the pier and Los Barquillos.
This Thursday, on the eve of San Juan, Arinaga Beach hosted the 'First Margullo' of the summer, the non-competitive swimming trip organized by the Agüimes City Council to begin the summer activities. A hundred athletes gathered at the event, ready to cover the 500 meters of route between the pier and the Los Barquillos area, where the finish arch was located.
The first to arrive covered the distance in just over 7 and a half minutes, while those furthest behind took about 20 minutes to do so. The swimmers enjoyed a dreamlike sunset in Arinaga Bay: pleasant temperature, absence of wind and crystal clear sea in perfect condition for swimming.
The anecdote of the test came from a beautiful mutt (Dasyatis parsnip) about two meters long that, perhaps called out of curiosity, placed itself on the starting line just below the swimmers, impressing more than one, despite its size. elusive and harmless character. After the initial honk, the athletes began to stroke towards Los Barquillos, some with a faster frequency than expected, while the mutt changed course to continue its slow wander along the bottom of the bay.
Upon arrival at the finish line there was no classification, trophies, or awards ceremony. Only applause from the public, live music, camaraderie and a well-deserved paella for the participants. More than enough to enjoy a festive and relaxed atmosphere by the sea. Swimmers, bathers and walkers were able to enjoy a different and enjoyable afternoon at Arinaga Beach, a prelude to a celebration of San Juan that attracted hundreds of people throughout the night around the restaurant establishments on the Avenue.
