They will learn to grind gofio with their own hands and using pre-Hispanic mills
The XXX Maspalomas Summer University has organized the 'Grinding Gofio' Workshop in which children and young people will learn to grind gofio with their own hands, as well as learn about agriculture and the basic food of the ancient inhabitants of the Canary Islands and the varieties of pre-Hispanic stone mills they used, all with the help of expert Abel Galindo Rodríguez.
This workshop will be held on July 7th and 8th, from 10:30 a.m. to 13:30 p.m. Registration for this workshop (€10), which will take place in Tony Gallardo Municipal Park, can be done through the website: https://www.universidadveranomaspalomas.org/materias/106/.
Before grinding gofio, attendees will learn about the process of separating seeds, among which are those used by the indigenous world of Gran Canaria (cereals, lentils, peas and beans), as well as others introduced after the Conquest (millo, chickpeas, rice and beans).
With this activity, the students will be able to grind the gofio using various reproductions of pre-Hispanic stone mills (barquiforms, mortars and circular mills).
This workshop will also allow us to learn about the nutritional and nutritional base of the ancient inhabitants of the Canary Islands, their agricultural economy (irrigated and dryland agriculture), as well as the differentiation between social scales for access and control of agricultural resources.
The XXX edition of the Maspalomas Summer University is organized by the City Council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) and the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Rights, Equality, Diversity and Youth of the Government of the Canary Islands, Casa África and the Social Council of the ULPGC.
