The popular celebration will once again bring together thousands of people on the last Friday of August in Playa de Arinaga, after two years without being able to take place due to the pandemic.

The Local Police of Agüimes, the Civil Guard, the Canarian Police, the Insular Consortium of Emergencies and Civil Protection, as well as representatives of the City Council and the Government Delegation in the Canary Islands, met this Tuesday in the formal framework of the Security Board for the celebrations of Pino, in Playa de Arinaga, and Rosario, in Agüimes Casco, in order to coordinate the security and emergency personnel of both celebrations. In addition to setting the resources that the different activities of the festivities will be able to count on, the meeting served to specify the specific devices of the two most massive events of each of them, the Vará del Pescao and the Traída del Gofio y el Agua, that will once again arouse the interest of neighbors and visitors after more than two consecutive years without being able to take place due to the pandemic.

The Vará del Pescao will take place, as usual, on the last Friday of the month of August. On the 26th of that month, thousands of people will once again gather on Avenida de Los Pescadores, waiting for the arrival of the boat that will deliver the fresh fish to the pilgrims. From Risco Verde to Los Barquillos, the carts will distribute hundreds of kilos of sardines among attendees, accompanied by the sound of bucios and the traditional music of the parrandas. This recalls the ancient tradition of the boatmen, who would notify of their arrival at the beach after a long day of work, to sell the fresh fish among the local residents.

Brought from the Gofio

The Bringing of Gofio and Water will be celebrated on the last Saturday of the month of September, which this year falls on the 24th. The festival recalls the ancient tradition of taking millo to the mills of Ananías and Lolita, located on the way to Guayadeque, and Once toasted and ground, bring the already prepared gofio back to the town, a staple food for families of yesteryear. Water was also collected in the fountains and ditches that were along the way. The custom of bringing the gofio to the town has been a reason for celebration for centuries and for the last 20 years it has been considered a Festival of National Tourist Interest.
