It will be located in San Bartolomé de Tirajana and its annual production will be capable of supplying more than 9.700 homes.
It will have an area of more than 400.000 square meters and will be made up of more than 40.000 units of photovoltaic modules
It was born with the aim of becoming a technological research center in which there will be room for training and the promotion of knowledge.
The company SM Energy Advence has presented to society the project to create the Gran Canaria Solar Energy Technology Park. The event was held at the company's headquarters, on Cano Street in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and was attended by the Minister of Ecological Transition of the Canary Islands, José Antonio Valbuena; the president of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales; the third deputy mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Antonio Pérez, the Mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Conchi Narváez, who intervened electronically, and the president of the company, Santiago Marrero.
The project will have an area of more than 400.000 square meters and will be made up of more than 40.000 units of photovoltaic modules. With the aim of respectfully taking advantage of the island's natural resources, it will be located in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, in the Lomo Gordo neighborhood, one of the best areas in Europe in terms of solar radiation. .
Likewise, it will house energy production and storage spaces such as smart solar greenhouses, bioagrivoltaics projects, floating solar photovoltaics and green hydrogen generation, with the intention of supplying a productive and business ecosystem around solar energy. It is estimated that the Gran Canaria Solar Energy Technology Park produces around 48.518.388,80 kWh per year, equivalent to stopping emitting 37.000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere and planting 537.000 Canary Islands pine trees. Its annual production will be capable of supplying more than 9.700 homes.
The organization, committed to the Canary Islands Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030, will be managed by professionals from the renewable energy sector and has clear objectives: contribute to the decarbonization of the Canary Islands, encourage technological innovation and manage renewable energies in a way easier. Furthermore, this park was born with the aim of becoming a technological research center in which there will be room for training and the promotion of knowledge.
The Gran Canaria Solar Energy Technology Park will provide tangible benefits such as the mitigation of climate change, the creation of knowledge, local employment – some 546 jobs – and green economic activity. In addition, it will reduce the energy dependence of the Archipelago thanks to the sustainable exploitation of local resources and will prioritize the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in order to contribute to the progress of society and the care of the planet.
Those present at the event highlighted the need to work on collaboration between private initiatives like this one and public administrations to overcome “the administrative and bureaucratic obstacles” that, on many occasions, make it difficult for this type of projects to materialize.
