The 15th edition of the Faro de Maspalomas Crafts Fair organized by the Cabildo of Gran Canaria through the FEDAC opens its doors today, completely recovering the splendor prior to the health crisis with the participation of 62 artisans and a wide sample of the creations of the main trades of the Canary Islands that both locals and tourists who are enjoying their holidays in the south of the island will be able to visit until August 21, from 17:00 p.m. to 23:00 p.m. in the gardens located in the surroundings of the emblematic lighthouse.
Ceramics, jewelry, wood, metal, leather, textile or glass are some of the 23 trades that will be represented - of the 87 that make up the official catalog - and whose works can be purchased at the different stands that the counselor toured today at the inauguration. of Industry, Commerce and Crafts, Minerva Alonso, who recalled that the sector has been especially affected by the turbulent situation of the economy and that is why it has had the support of the FEDAC - in the fulfillment of its own objectives - “and now it must count on all citizens, local and foreign, whom I encourage to come to learn about the extraordinary work of our great artisans and acquire some of these unique pieces, and in this way they can keep their workshops open and the survival of this part of our rich culture,” he declared.
And the Fair is, for artisans, a chance to leave the workshop and dedicate themselves to direct sales, to promote contact with the buyer by facilitating orders and the presentation of new products. In addition, this year, the fair once again has a space where each day a live demonstration by an artisan of the techniques of the trade he performs has been scheduled, so that visitors can learn up close how he does his work. And at the FEDAC stand you can visit a temporary exhibition dedicated to craftsmanship in the home of Gran Canaria.
The island counselor also highlighted how the works combine tradition and design while appreciating the sensitivity and exclusivity that artisanal production gives to each product. “Fedac is proposing a new training approach for artisanal activities based on new technologies and the integration of new production materials, in entrepreneurship, innovation and marketing,” explained Alonso, who assured that all of this will be appreciated in this 15th edition of the Fair.
In addition to the Fairs, the sector has FEDAC craft stores, located in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and in the Faro Ethnographic Center of Maspalomas, which allow it to have a point of sale throughout the year.
