The Mogán City Council has presented the program for the V Summer Mango and Avocado Fair that will take place in the municipality (Playa de Mogán) next Sunday, September 4, starting at 10:00 am. The press conference was chaired by Ernesto Hernández, Councilor for Rural Development, Public Works and Finance; and Federico Hernández, representative of Cajasiete. The fair returns to Mogán after two years of absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the party will begin on Friday, September 2, with the celebration of the 'Wine and Tapas Night' (21:00 p.m.).
“The V fair is full of enthusiasm from both the organizers and those who participate, which in this edition stands out for the increase in participants, reaching 20 farmers who will put on sale around 6.000 kg of mangoes and 1.500 kg of avocados, as well as papayas, pitayas, prickly pears or figs, among others,” Ernesto Hernández explained at the beginning of his presentation. The Councilor for Rural Development also highlighted that the number of artisans who will participate in this long-awaited edition has increased to 28, surpassing the records of previous events, or the usual gastronomic area with different novelties.
The fair to be held in Mogán on September 4 will have earlier mango varieties such as Tolber and Glenw, absent in previous editions, but which will be present this year due to changes in the weather. “There is also the Mum variety, recently established in the municipality, and the usual Ostein, Kaith, Valencia, Price and varieties from the country,” said Hernández. These changes in the weather “have affected the production of avocados of the time, the Antillean ones that we brought to this fair, and which we call Summer Avocado,” the councilor explained. Despite the decrease in production, they will not stop being present to "continue promoting knowledge of these less commercial varieties, but of great quality such as the already well-known Berruga, native to Mogán." Visitors will also be able to purchase products such as honey, jam, oil, bread, sweets or fruit wines, among other mango wines.
Regarding the Crafts area, Ernesto Hernández celebrated the increase in participants (up to 28 artisans from all over the island) who will show “high quality work in toys, leather goods, work with goat horns or in the making of cigars that we cannot miss. ”. In addition, the Gastronomy area "will be, as always, one of the most lively at the fair with tastings of tapas and pinchos with mango and avocado, pizzas with avocado dough, cocktails and vermouth, wines, guarapo, beer and juices." The Mejunje party will liven up the fifth edition of a fair that “is not only agricultural, but also a festival for the Moganero primary sector.”
For his part, the representative of Cajasiete - a collaborating entity -, Federico Hernández, assured that they are “delighted” to collaborate in this V Mogán Summer Mango and Avocado Fair. “As the Caja Rural that we are, linked to the primary sector and founded by farmers, we like to promote this event because it is a source of pride; We try to ensure that they always count on us,” he stated during the presentation of the event. Councilor Ernesto Hernández concluded the presentation by thanking the collaboration of the participants and the support of collaborators such as the Cabildo of Gran Canaria and the Cajasiete banking entity itself.
